A superseding indictment returned by a Manhattan grand jury on Tuesday charged Sen. Robert Menendez, D-New Jersey, with obstruction of justice, bribery and extortion, adding new detail to prosecutors’ allegations that he traded his high-ranking position for personal gain.
The indictment comes less than a week after New Jersey businessman Jose Uribe, one of three businessmen charged alongside Menendez and his wife in September, pleaded guilty to tax evasion, obstruction of justice and fraud offenses.
