The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court heard arguments Monday about ballot initiatives that could potentially ask voters to weigh in as to whether app-based drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft are recognized as independent contractors in the state.

The high court appeared receptive to allowing the initiative to go forward and heard arguments about how the proposal could have wide-ranging effects under multiple employment laws in Massachusetts.
