Opening statements were given Monday in Delaware’s first Roundup trial, kicking off what’s scheduled to be a four-week proceeding in the Superior Court case involving a South Carolina man who claimed the Monsanto herbicide caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Bart Rankin of the Dallas-based Forrest Weldon Law Group said the plaintiff will show that Monsanto, now part of Bayer, acted in self interest and refused to address safety concerns with Roundup, while Arnold & Porter partner Pamela Yates argued the jury doesn’t have to like Monsanto to recognize there’s no proof Roundup causes cancer either generally or in Anthony Cloud, who died shortly after filing his case in 2021.
