A jury in U.S. District Court in Camden awarded $3.52 million on Dec. 19 to a Colorado man who claimed Freedom Mortgage Corp. of Mount Laurel breached its contractual obligation to fund the reconstruction of his home after it was destroyed by fire.
According to court papers in the case Farrington v. Freedom Mortgage, after Steven Farrington’s home burned in 2014, his insurance company paid his loss claim to his mortgage lender, Ocwen, which was then acquired by Freedom Mortgage. But Freedom did not make disbursements to Farrington for reconstruction of the home, causing massive delays when contractors abandoned the job, the suit claimed.
