A federal judge in Illinois approved a wrongful-death settlement for more than $880,000 and motion to approve the distribution of the funds against Cook County, as well as determining how to distribute the award granted to the estate of a man who died by suicide while detained at a jail in Chicago.

In a July 12 opinion, U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Young B. Kim for the Northern District of Illinois awarded $883,397.22 to the estate of Areon Marion. Kim ordered the distribution of those funds to include: $2,000 to Marion’s younger brother, Dominic Wilson; $2,500 to his older brother, Robert Marion; $87,889.72 to his father, Adair Joyner; and $791,007.50 to his mother, Joanna Wilson, who served as the independent administrator of the estate.
