The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is scheduled to finalize a proposed rule next month that would designate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances as hazardous substances under the Superfund law and hold polluters accountable for cleaning up the contamination.
In August 2022, the EPA proposed designating two of the most widely used per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—the so-called “forever chemicals”—as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
