Amazon submitted a petition for arbitration against Amazon Flex delivery drivers in the California Southern District Court on Friday. The motion is one of several filed by the Big Tech giant in multiple states amid ongoing litigation by delivery drivers.
Amazon Flex, launched in 2015, is a gig-work platform that allows drivers to deliver Amazon packages with their own vehicles. Flex drivers seeking to change their employment status from independent contractors to employees filed a putative class action under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) and a putative state-law class action against Amazon, which is headquartered in Seattle, in the Western District of Washington in 2016.
