Nature, adventure and suspense combine in the latest chapter of the acclaimed countryside series
Michael Mathers has announced the publication of New Horizons Book 2, continuing his celebrated fiction series with another gripping adventure. Richly inspired by the countryside, the novel blends compelling storytelling, memorable characters and an enduring appreciation for the natural environment.
The release marks another achievement for Michael, whose writing career began after a conversation with close friend John Hursey, a respected writer and accomplished classical pianist. The pair originally planned to write together, but after completing the opening pages, Hursey encouraged Michael to continue the story independently. Michael credits that encouragement with helping him begin the creative journey that followed.
Michael’s background in forestry and his lifelong appreciation of wildlife have shaped the foundation of the series. His practical experience allows him to bring realistic landscapes and authentic animal characters to life throughout each novel.
The first two books are set on a remote island situated off Scotland’s rugged west coast, where the surrounding landscape plays a vital role in the story. New Horizons Book 2 continues to explore this dramatic location and the close relationship between its characters and the natural world.
As the series progresses, attention gradually shifts toward the Scottish mainland. By Book Three, the story takes place entirely on the west coast mainland, expanding both the setting and the scale of the adventure.
Although the series features many memorable animals, Michael says Calvin the pig is his favourite character, even though Calvin is the only animal he has never encountered through personal experience. He laughs that he hopes the others never hear about it.
Beneath the adventure lies a subtle theme that unfolds quietly through every relationship and event. Rather than spelling out its meaning, Michael invites readers to discover it for themselves.
The novels also blend realistic survival with touches of the mysterious, leaving room for readers to decide how those elements fit together.
Book Three introduces the greatest challenge yet as the three main characters battle relentless dangers in a desperate attempt to survive. Their bravery, resilience and determination are tested throughout an intense and gripping journey.
The book is published by Maple Publishers, a UK publishing company that supports imaginative authors and offers professional book cover design and book layout services.
