The National Football League and industry groups have told the Federal Trade Commission to be even-handed in its proposed rule to prohibit businesses across the economy from imposing hidden fees on consumer goods and services, lest those companies who comply with the regulation fall victim to competitors who either do not or are exempt.
The FTC’s proposal would require companies to include all mandatory fees when showing prices, enabling consumers to search for the best deal without concern for hidden charges known as “junk fees.” The agency also would be able to seek monetary penalties against noncomplying companies and secure refunds for consumers.
