The Judicial Council has adopted a new rule governing when a judge can appear remotely during civil proceedings, placing limits on a practice that sometimes became a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rule 10.635 of the California Rules of Court will require a superior court’s presiding judge to approve of any judicial officer presiding over a matter via remote technology. Additionally, a judge can only preside remotely when it’s “in the interest of justice.”
