Ellis Horvitz, who was instrumental in the recognition and growth of appellate practice as a specialty in California, was one of my mentors. I worked alongside him on many complex appeals for over 13 years, first as an associate and then as one of his law partners. His loss this spring hit me and others he nurtured hard.
Ellis’ lessons were many. It seems only fitting to honor him, and his impact on appellate law, by sharing some of those lessons, and paying his wisdom forward to the next generation of appellate lawyers and leaders. Here are five of those lessons.
