TIKTOK CHALLENGED – TikTok could face a fine of up to £27 million after the U.K. Information Commisioner’s Office (ICO) found that the company may have breached U.K. data protection law and put children’s data privacy at risk, Law.com International’s Jack Womack reports. The video sharing application, popular with children and teenagers, has been issued a “notice of intent” by the ICO after “provisional findings” showed that the company may have failed to protect children’s privacy when using the platform. The investigation concluded that between May 2018 and July 2020, the company may have processed the data of children under the age of 13 without appropriate parental consent and failed to provide proper information to its users in an easily understandable way. The commissioners findings also showed that TikTok may have processed “special category data,” which refers to information including race, political opinions, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, without legal grounds to do so.
