China has the power to alter the futures of many top international law firms in Asia.

Just look at its crackdown last year on the operations of mainland China-affiliated legal practices of the Big Four accounting firms, its shift in economic policy calling for a focus on domestic markets, or the recent reopening of its borders after three years of harsh COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns.
