Developing Your Legal Niche Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

As the new year begins, many of us have set goals for growth and health. But the difference maker that will distinguish between success and failure is consistency. Many will be diligent for the first few weeks and then slowly fall away from the work it takes to succeed. These are often the people who set their alarms early to make time for exercise, even taking a run in the middle of July, while others have long since shed this routine. Driving your practice growth is no different—it takes a consistent, process-driven approach. No matter what industry you serve, law firm leaders who consistently display their expertise become trusted advisors. Here are the proven steps to help you grow as a thought leader, increase exposure, and ultimately win more work.

Research Industry Groups

Identify the key industry groups in your area of law, such as trade associations, conferences, and community organizations. Research their mission and leadership, and look for initiatives that align with your specific area of expertise. Talk with peers to determine if time will be well spent in these associations and find people you know or would like to get to know to help you build relationships and expand your knowledge.
