A subsidiary of Houston-based ExxonMobil Corp. avoided a $100 million judgment last year but has since lost control, in a California state court order, of the oil field under litigation.

In December, a Vinson & Elkins defense team in Houston convinced a jury in Kern County, California that Aera Energy LLC, jointly owned by ExxonMobil and Shell Oil Co., didn’t need to pay damages to plaintiffs Vaquero Partners L.P., a California company, and New Orleans-based Madison Energy LLC.
