A lack of necessary expertise and talent is preventing many legal teams from leveraging generative AI technology, according to Consilio’s Legalweek 2024 survey of 129 legal professionals, half of which came from law firms, while 43% came from corporate legal departments and 6% from government-affiliated entities.

Asked what is preventing them from using generative AI, slightly over 36% of respondents cited their legal teams’ limited, or nonexistent, expertise in leveraging the technology, while around 34% pointed to either limited resources or generative AI’s potential for hallucinations. What’s more, slightly over 27% cited a lack of the “right tech talent” to support generative AI implementations, while around 20% said either that the risks outweigh the benefits or that they’re first waiting for broader industry adoption.
