Companies should not share or sell users’ sensitive information—such as geolocation or health data—without “affirmatively” receiving permission from users to do so, Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan said Friday.
“Given the continued digitization across the economy, privacy is really fundamental and making sure that people are not being subjected to data abuse,” Khan said at the spring meeting of the American Bar Association antitrust section. “That people are not having to surrender to endless surveillance just to use basic services that are essential for navigating day-to-day life is absolutely critical.”
