Australia-headquartered mining giant BHP and its Brazilian partner Vale have offered to settle for $26 billion claims by Brazil brought over the 2015 mining disaster that killed 19 and caused widespread environmental damage.

The offer comes after talks broke down in December 2023 in which Brazilian law firm Mattos Filho advised BHP, Sergio Bermudes Advogados represented Vale and Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados represented Samarco.
